I have read some of Doyle’s Sherlockian wonderment, but I do not consider myself an avid reader of his work. I do, however, love all movies and TV shows of the Sherlock variety. Of which, there seem to be plenty to choose from recently.
There are the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey, Jr. as a drug addled, eccentric Sherlock. There is Elementary with Jonny Lee Miller playing the formerly drug addled, but still eccentric Sherlock. BUT…my favorite by far is BBC’s Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch playing a brilliant, sarcastic, ADHD, snobbish Holmes. I can’t even put into words how excited I was to see the new sneak peek into Sherlock: Season 3!! It is wonderfully vague. I cannot wait to see how Sherlock got out of his last predicament.
I do not find Benedict Cumberbatch an exceptionally good-looking man, but he is not ugly by any means. What I do find incredibly attractive about him is how well he has honed his craft. He has brought a whole new dimension to the character of Holmes that I never envisioned…he drips with sarcasm. I have a friend who calls me the “Queen of Sarcasm” so I find a kindred spirit in his version of Holmes. His penchant for correcting people’s grammar makes me laugh out loud. His intolerance for stupidity…well, what can I say? I could never elevate myself to his level of intellect, but we can’t all be as perfect as Sherlock. Thank you Mr. Cumberbatch for having a very cool name and for making Sherlock both a kindred spirit and unobtainable simultaneously. Oh, and I cannot fail to mention Martin Freeman’s brilliant portrayal of Watson, without whom Sherlock would never be complete.
Get ready for Season 3! I’m sure it will be a wild ride. I for one will be waiting on pins and needles. If you have not seen the first two seasons of Sherlock they are on Netflix. I caught them after the fact as well, but rest assured, I will be watching Season 3 as it comes.
